According to the United Nations 2024 SDGs Report, only 17% of the Sustainable Development Goals are on track. With less than 5 years to 2030 more action is needed to inspire hope and drive grassroots transformation for the Goals by 2030.

The University of Nairobi in collaboration with the Global Youth Forum and United Nations Football For The Goals will be hosting the Inter – County Football for The Goals Championship 2025.

A four-year term project aims to engage 94 football teams from across the 47 counties starting with 17 counties in 2025, followed by 17 in 2026 and 13 in 2027 with a National Championship comprising of top 3 teams from each category for each region battling for the National SDGs Championship in 2028.

The tournament will be hosted at the University of Nairobi's main campus football grounds where the 34 teams (17 male & 17 female) will be representing a Sustainable Development Goal of their choice.

Following a successful Inaugural Football for The Goals Tournament held in Siaya County in 2023 and following up with the Inter–Campus Futsal Championship 2024, the tournament has the following objectives.

  • Advocating for the SDGs: The tournament seeks to raise awareness about the importance of the SDGs and their role in building a sustainable future. Through the power of football, the event will highlight the need for collective action to achieve these goals.
  • Coherent Messaging of Actions: With critical events such as the Summit of the Future held in September 2024 leading to the adoption of the PACT for the future, the tournament will support a communications campaign across Africa to ensure coherent messaging and effective delivery of the PACT for the future at the local, national and International level. This will facilitate impactful dialogues and outcomes in international gatherings.
  • Promoting Sustainable Practices: The tournament will serve as a platform to showcase sustainable practices in sports, such as eco-friendly stadiums, waste reduction measures, and renewable energy solutions. The event aims to inspire others to adopt similar practices by demonstrating the positive impact of sustainable initiatives.
  • Youth Empowerment: The tournament will give young football players and enthusiasts a unique opportunity to showcase their talent, strengthen their skills, and gain valuable experience. Additionally, it will encourage youth engagement in sustainable development efforts, empowering them to develop and implement SDGs projects of their choice within their local communities.
